Reflection For GM Foods

During the first term we looked at GM foods and we went through all of the four criteria which were all out of 8 marks each. they were:  Inquiring and analyzing, developing ideas, creating a solution and evaluating the situation. for each of them we posted something on our blog:

  • Inquiring and analyzing: we researched the questions and put them onto our blog
  • developing ideas: we made a word document explaining advantages and disadvantages of the 3 software which were: power point, word or paint
  • creating a solution and evaluating the solution: we made the power point

In our power point we included information about the science behind Gm foods and why it is good or bad. We also included opinions that other people had. We also included the basic necessities of a power point which we the obvious like the font, background, pictures, transitions and animations. When we were done with our PPT we learnt how to use the snipping tool to put it onto our blog. After all of that we had to make a poster about GM foods which was going to be used for display

Developing Ideas

Power Point:

Advantages:

  1. It is easier to present because of the bullet points
  2. you can write little and keep notes on the slide and if you understand the information then you can explain it to the other people.
  3. it is more organized compared to word and paint

Disadvantages:

  1. You can only write limited amount of writing otherwise it goes onto another slide
  2. If the theme goes wrong then the power point does not stay clear
  3. you will need to have a computer and projection equipment in place to display the slides to the audience

Word:

Advantages:

  1. Easily correct any mistakes which are made
  2. Can save multiple versions of documents and easily sort them so that you can go back to previous versions of the same document
  3. Spell and grammar checking

Disadvantages:

  1. Data can sometimes be lost due to data corruption.
  2. Some symbols aren't easily accessible, which makes typing in different languages that use a different alphabet is difficult.
  3. Requires a computer to edit or view documents which may sometimes not be there

Paint:

Advantages:

  1. We can insert images
  2. Paint can be formulated to meed any color specification for your project.
  3. Bright metallic color based on aluminum flake is better in liquid technology.

Disadvantages:

  1. It is very unorganized
  2. putting text into it can be a challenge
  3. it can be difficult to present information from it

Genetically Modified Foods Worksheet

1.    What is the science behind GM foods?

GM foods are made through a process known as genetic engineering. Genes of commercial interest are transferred form one organism to another. People take a bit of one plants DNA which carries their genetics and inject it into another plant to make it look different. The gene gun is one of the various methods used to do this. The DNA that has to be transferred is coated onto tiny particles and then they are physically shot into the plant.

2.    What foods are affected by this technology?

Soybeans, corn, canola, cotton seed oil, alfalfa, tomato, sugar cane, sugar beets, rice, squash, sweet peppers, sausages and much more.

3.    What are the problems with this technology?

GM foods are plants with an altered DNA which means that they are not natural. Because they have an altered DNA they are more resistant to herbicides.

4.    What action has been taken to try and prevent the technology developing?

People are speaking up against it and they are doing campaigns.

5.    How can you find out information about these questions?
